#Bringingthecolourback Reliving Bollywood’s poster era
Apr 2, 2022

Indian Hippy has been working hard since 2009 to ensure that vintage posters of films are restored. Hinesh Jethwani shares, “Studying this art form takes four to five years – these painters were self-taught, and they used rudimentary techniques which are not taught in art schools. They captured the raw emotions of the films from their stills and created these visual treats which have become part of memorabilia today. Today, in the name of a poster what you see is an airbrushed image of a star.”

Art and its crusaders
February 22, 2019

When Jethwani’s career hit a bump in 2008 — his IT business tanked during recession — a collection of newspaper clippings and a fascination for the dying art of hand-painted movie posters gave him new purpose. “It didn’t start off as a business plan; I had a lot of time on my hands and I wanted to do an experiment, to see what the artists were capable of and how people would react to it,” recalls the 38-year-old. An unusual plan for someone who did not enjoy Bollywood films growing up! In the last decade, they’ve succeeded in popularising the art form, creating everything from customised posters to 25-foot canvases for hotels like Stillwell Hotel in Los Angeles.

India’s heritage needs saviours. Here are 15 of them
Oct 14, 2018

Before Photoshop and hi-res prints, vivid hand-painted posters were what greeted moviegoers. When the 2008 recession hit India, Jethwani’s IT business tanked, and he began tracking down the artists behind these old posters. “They were close to retiring for good,” he recalls. “Many had given up the paintbrush several years ago and changed careers.” Indian Hippy, a collective of Hindi movie poster artists, was the result of these conversations. “We wanted to get the younger generation fascinated and inquisitive about this beautiful hand-painted art form that existed much before the multiplex cinema culture came into vogue,” Jethwani says. It’s worked, too—over nine years, Indian Hippy has played an important role in upping the ante on vintage movie poster art appreciation. Their repertoire now includes customised portraits as well as elaborate wall canvases for restaurants.

While movie posters are largely viewed as relics of a past era, a small tribe of designers remains committed about going back to the drawing board, finds out Marisha Karwa
Dec 05, 2017

Time was when a movie poster was the sole paraphernalia that bridged the gap between publicity tool and an iconic collectible. But with digital platforms taking over from the print medium, the movie poster today has been relegated to a silent cue, a prompt at best, to remind potential cine goers of a movie. “In the past, the poster was the sole snapshot of the movie… it was the very first image of an upcoming movie,” points out Hinesh Jethwani, founder and head of Indian Hippy and Bollywood Movie Posters. “The poster was consumed everywhere, at tea stalls, on street walls, got featured in magazines and newspapers. It would build anticipation. Now that function is being performed by trailers, video clips and stars on reality TV shows. The poster has lost its value as a marketing tool.”
